GSA For Oakland Immigrant Youth

Hi! My name is Lilly Rosenthal and I am the liaison for the GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) at Oakland International High School. In the 2024-25 school year, we are continuing to facilitate an important space for LGBTQIA+ students to cultivate joy, solidarity, and community.

At OIHS, an Oakland public school, we serve immigrant and refugee youth who have settled here to pursue safer, more prosperous futures. More than 22% of our students are refugees who have escaped some of the world’s most violent and protracted conflicts. Our students are amazing, brilliant young people who benefit hugely from affinity groups like GSA to provide support and community.

In previous years we taken field trips to the Castro, Alameda Beach, Drag Me to the Cinema, and North Eastern University for Oakland GSA day. We also throw a Halloween party, a mid-year celebration, and an end-of-year celebration. We are fundraising again to provide GSA field trips, events, group meals, and educational workshops. With your help, we can provide joyful and affirming experiences for our LGBTQIA+ students.
