Greenwood Tunnel of Flags Rehabilitation

Donation protected
The Tunnel of Flags is one of  the most recognizable and photographed heritage sites in the Boundary Region of British Columbia .  Completed in 1913, the tunnel took traffic under the Kettle Valley Railroad line that passed above.  Buried and forgotten for decades, it was unearthed when later tunnels were removed.

Greenwood Mayor Arno Hennig saw the tunnel as a canvas on which to create a show of global diversity, and began a community initiative that eventually saw over 210  national flags painted by volunteers on the concrete structure.

Sadly, the last decade has not been kind to the tunnel - a combination of the elements and vandalism have destroyed much of what made the tunnel special.

Our goal is to raise enough to have the tunnel cleaned up, the flags restored and / or redone, possibly funding some additional mural work.

This is a grassroots heritage initiative, in the spirit of the vision that Arno Hennig had when he began his work over 30 years ago.   It is not intended to replace, duplicate or supplant what the City of Greenwood intends to do, only to assist in funding care and management of the site.

Any and all contributions will go directly to the restoration of the Tunnel of Flags.  Thank you.
