Emergency Water Fund for Green Tree Estates
Residents of Green Tree Estates, a predominantly Hispanic, working class community in Denton, Texas, are at risk of losing their homes because they lack access to clean drinking water.
The well they were receiving water from was shut off back in November of 2019. Since then residents of Green Tree have lived in uncertainty about where they can gain access to water, jeopardizing their homes, their families, and their community. They have been working relentlessly to finally have access to potable water. In order to remain in their homes they now have to raise the funds to be able to connect to city water. The fact that COVID-19 is happening just makes it all more of a nightmare.
There are 6 households actively trying to raise money to make all necessary repairs, pay the $6938 connection cost per home, plus pay for connection from water meter to individual homes (digging trenches, plumber, pipes, etc.). Each family may need anywhere from $7K to $10K, depending on the distance from water lines and types of repairs needed.
Residents asked for one year to save up money for the city water connection fees, but their requests were denied by Denton City Council which set a payment deadline of July 3rd. If they are unable to raise the money by then, they will likely lose their homes.
