Green Germantown
Donation protected
We are initiating this GO FUND ME campaign to raise money to help defray the cost of trees, plants and shrubs to be installed in the courtyard and in a new rain garden in our parking lot.
To improve the stormwater run-off at our property and contribute to the revitalization of Germantown, Historic Germantown (HG) will be replacing an existing asphalt courtyard with grass and installing a rain garden in the parking lot. This project will greatly improve our property and the community, as it reduces stormwater runoff and potential flooding, and contributes to the beautification of the neighborhood. A grant by the Philadelphia Water Department’s Stormwater Management Incentives Program (SMIP) will fund most of the costs of this project.
A long-term goal of this rain garden planting effort is to establish a garden club of volunteers who feel invested in this project and will continue as volunteers to maintain the rain garden.
This project will result in a new green space that will be used for workshops and events, and generally improve the attractiveness of HG’s courtyard. The visible, well-planted rain garden will soften the urban streetscape on Church Lane, enhancing visitors’ experiences, and engaging neighbors and volunteers in the maintenance of its plantings. This project will enable new opportunities for educational programming in the courtyard garden. The greening of our public space contributes to the beautification of the neighborhood, and is a great example of HG’s commitment to being stewards of revitalization and preservation in Germantown.
The groundbreaking of the project will occur in April 2017. We need to raise $2500 for plant material by May 1, 2017.
WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Any amount contributes to our fundraising goal!
About Historic Germantown: HG is a partnership of 16 historic houses and museums in Northwest Philadelphia that have joined together to protect, preserve, and share some of Philadelphia’s prized historical assets. Historic Germantown tells the stories of American liberty and the everyday people who fought for it, reflecting a neighborhood of independence-seekers, community-builders, and American dreamers. Located just minutes from Center City, Historic Germantown is where one of Philadelphia's Revolutionary war battles was fought; where the first-ever American protest against slavery was written; and where one of the few remaining houses on the Underground Railroad still stands.
