On the night of August 9, 2014, Greenville, South Carolina experienced a rain event that caused serious flash flooding throughout the area. It was so extreme that a portion of Interstate 85 had to be shut down. In our part of the city, almost 6 inches of rain fell in 2 hours. When a section of the flood barrier we had built to protect the property collapsed, our house was damaged beyond repair, my home business was destroyed and Chris' car was totaled. We were forced to wade through chest-deep debris-filled water in the dark to escape. It was the scariest night of our lives.
Because we never imagined this could happen and because we had survived 10 years at our house saved by the flood barrier we had spent $30,000 to erect, we only carried enough flood coverage to pay off the mortgage balance. So, we literally stood in the pouring rain and watched the 10 years of equity we had built into our home vanish in 10 minutes. It has been emotionally and financially devastating.
Since the flood, we've incurred thousands of dollars in unexpected expenses. Packing materials and storage for the things we saved, car rental fees until Chris' auto claim was settled, the extended stay hotel which is almost $2000 a month, dumpster rental, furniture movers, the list goes on and on. Because we had any flood insurance and are both gainfully employed, we don't qualify for assistance from the Red Cross or the Federal Government.
Since we lost so much, please know that any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated. When we are back on our feet and able to move forward, we intend to donate all of the funds we receive to charity, no matter how long it takes!
