This is Scotty.
He hangs out at the Northcote plaza. Scotty has been homeless for the last 4.5yrs. Prior to that he was healthy, happy man working on farms in Tasmania.
After 2 traumatic experiences that have left him with back, neck and brain injuries he is now with out work or a home. He suffered a terrible accident whilst working on a farm that left him in a wheel chair for 2 .5years. When he moved from the wheel chair to walking, he was in the city when he was attacked and badly beaten and his head jumped on by girls in high heel shoes, which ended him up in hospital with damage to his brain and aorta.
He received a payout as a result of his farm accident but his lawyer & medicare took most of it.
He is homeless and can not access Centrelink as they said his payout should have lasted him 2 years.
His family are overseas and not willing to help. And he has no friends that can house him or help him in any way.
The services he needs are expensive even homeless shelters are $180 a week without food. He is scared of those places as well and tries to avoid any areas that are troubled with drugs and alcohol issues. He walks long distances to pitch his tent ⛺️ in a remote area away from others.
He is doing it tougher than tough.
His desperately needs dental assistance - he has 1 tooth left after the beatings and accident.
His neck gives him constant pain and his doctor has prescribed him expensive medication that he cant afford.
He has no money to see a physio or do any rehab for his back.
He had a job but it was too hard on his back so he had to stop.
He is not used to living on the streets and so he is very traumatised. Daily he is battling to survive and often gets beaten in the streets when is seeking shelter.
Scotty is dedicated to getting on top of his health - mental and physical and spends every moment and small money he can just trying to keep on top of it.
The members of Good Karma Network Northcote have a help group together to try and get him help to fund his health needs, find him a home and set him up with some funding and employment opportunities.
