Global Citizenship Project: Legazpi

The Philippines is a country with a population of more or less 95 million people. The disparity between the rich and the poor is quite wide. Almost 80 percent of the population comprises of the middle class down to the poorest of the poor. The public education is state-funded and is ”supposed to be for free”. The truth is that it is not, because of the so-called “miscellaneous fees” that the public schools charge the students, which makes it difficult and sometimes impossible for the poorest of the poor families to send their children to school.

12 years ago, the individuals with special exceptionalities at Banquerohan Legaspi City, a small rural village, whose major livelihood of its residents is farming and fishing, had no opportunity to go to school. Not only could their families not afford to send them to school, but there was no existing education program specifically for them. They were to a large extent “invisible” in society as they were just kept at home.

In the year 2004, the SPED (Special Education) center was established in the village as a response to the endless requests from the parents and guardians. At present, the center is integrated into the village elementary school with a total population of 1060 students. There are 64 students with different exceptionalities; namely children with Autism, children with intellectual disability, children with behavioral and emotional challenges, children with hearing impairment, children with visual impairment, children with Cerebral Palsy or children with multiple special needs.

In April 2016, Futuraskolan visited Banquerohan Elementary school and  worked as volunteers to better understand how they work and to observe their learning situations .The experience was very meaningful and left us with many thoughts for reflection. There was no doubt that the physical school environment of these students is not conducive for learning. The lack of pedagogical materials and resources were painfully evident and not to mention the family living standards were very unfortunate.

Despite this, the school has very dedicated, committed and knowledgeable teachers who do everything to the best of their abilities and resources to support the education of these students.

Acting and doing something meaningful to others has always been a part of Futuraskolan’s value ground. Throughout this journey, Futuraskolan has donated some materials in order to allow for further development and more learning possibilities. We see possibilities in our future collaboration, and together we will make an impact!

The money that we are currently raising is for our upcoming trip to Legaspi in an effort to sponsor children who cannot get to school due to economic reasons, or physical disabilities. The sponsorship will allow students to pay for transportation to and from school, meals to get through the day, as well as basic school supplies.

Please help us reach our goal, any contribution will make a significant difference to our friends in the Philippines.
