Please help support Glastonbury Abbey
Glastonbury Abbey is a site of international historic importance, however it also provides an essential sanctuary where people can be outdoors in a beautiful and safe environment.
The site is almost entirely dependent on visitor and trading income which is largely generated during the Spring and Summer, so has been particularly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
As an independent charity we don't receive regular funding from any other sources, such as the church or the government.
We ask that you help support us through this difficult time with a donation.
Brief background to the abbey
The abbey was England’s second largest and wealthiest medieval monastery. It is unique and distinctive from other similar heritage sites in that it is internationally famed as King Arthur’s burial place, for its early origins story linked to Joseph of Arimathea (AD 63) and its national archaeological and spiritual significance. The largely intact 36 acre precinct, an important monastic designed landscape, includes: listed Grade 1, 2* & 2 medieval ruins of the Great Church, Lady Chapel, precinct wall and monastic buildings; St Patrick’s Chapel and intact fourteenth century Abbot’s Kitchen – one of the finest and best preserved buildings of its type in Northern Europe ; and Grade 2* Abbey House and gardens. Archaeology attests to over 1500 years of occupation and the beautiful grounds form the largest green space in Glastonbury as well as providing a unique natural habitat.
As well as access to the grounds, interpretation of the ruins, buildings and collections in the Arts Council Accredited museum, we normally provide a café and shop and a varied programme of events and activities for our visitors.
