Please help me help others

Hey everyone,

The passing of my uncle Ray earlier this year was the first time that a close family member had gone and it led me to do a lot of soul searching as to what I really wanted to accomplish before my time comes.

Ray was an avid body builder, cyclist and volunteered abroad quite a bit. While I'm far from being a body builder, I have fell in love with cycling as of lately and have also been wanting to give back and help others who are in need.

I started researching various nonprofit organizations who set up volunteer projects in the hopes of finding a way to put my talents to good use. I ended up finding amazing projects that really help and try to make this world a better place.

That being said it still costs money to participate in these projects and that's where I decided to ask my wonderful Facebook friends if anyone would be down to help a brother out.

*cue Sarah Mclachlan song... Any song....*

Every dollar that you send will be used to help someone in need.  The project I'd like to participate in will probably have to do with environmental conservation. The project costs $2000 and flights are NOT included so I will also be spending money on this as well.

Here are the project details so you know exactly what your money will be going towards:

Project Details

We are working in Phang Nga in order to gain an understanding of the local ecosystems, help with current environmental protection initiatives, and conduct research contributing to future conservation efforts of a range of unique and endangered species.. Our goal is to sustain the long-term conservation of the area and aid in the preservation of the natural environment in conjunction with local communities.

We are working in Phang Nga to preserve and better understand some of the astonishingly beautiful and diverse ecosystems in the area. Our goal is to sustain the long-term conservation of marine and terrestrial systems by using a three-tiered approach:

Contribute to scientific understanding through research.

Educate and inform local people about conservation issues.

Building the capacity and desire of local people to operate sustainably.

How this project makes a difference:

Your presence as a volunteer will help to protect some of the world’s most beautiful forests, beaches and coral reef systems. By adopting a holistic conservation approach, we are educating the community on local environmental issues. This means dealing not only with research, but also the social and economic pressures that are leading to the destruction of Southern Thailand’s beautiful forests, rivers, reefs and beaches. Thailand is home to some of the world’s most majestic and captivating wildlife. You have an opportunity to help protect and conserve it.

Phang Nga's short, mid, and long-term objectives

All of our programs have short, mid and long-term objectives that fit with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This enables us to report on our collaborative impact across the world in a streamlined manner, measuring which UN SDGs we are making a substantial contribution to. Furthermore, this will help our local partners and communities measure and visualize their contribution to the UN SDGs.

Upon arrival to base, you will be educated about the history of the UN SDGs. You will learn about the specific goals of your location, the long-, mid- and short-term objectives, and also clarification of how your personal, shorter-term involvement contributes to these goals on a global level.

Our aim is to educate you on local and global issues, so that you continue to act as active global citizens after your program, helping to fulfil our mission of building a global network of people united by their passion to make a difference.

Learn about the long-term objectives you will be contributing to in Phang Nga:

1. To provide equal, quality education to children of all backgrounds.

2. To Promote Good Health and Wellbeing through education to all children

3. Increase skills for local people to assist with equal employment opportunities in our communities within Takuapa and Ban Nham Khem

4. Increase awareness of local populations to environmental issues and facilitate change towards sustainability through scientific studies.

5. Increase our in-country capacity by providing environmental and conservation education and training

6. To assist and develop local coastal conservation efforts through providing practical support to project partners, data collection, awareness raising and habitat restoration

Every dollar raised will go towards covering the cost of participating in one of these projects. Every dollar raised above that will be donated to the Children Of The Street organization who help prevent the sexual exploitation and human trafficking of children and youth, while offering support to families.

I'd really appreciate any help at all, even simply sharing this post would be tremendously appreciated.
