Girls and women in need

Hello everybody, we are FEM - Verein für Frauen* und Mädchen* (association for women* and girls*) and we are trying to end period poverty by providing period products to the women's shelter. Period poverty affects women, girls and people who menstruate worldwide. It means there is a lack of access to menstrual products, education, hygiene facilities, waste management, or a combination of these. It affects an estimated 500 million people worldwide. Period poverty mainly occurs because of having a low income. If you're only earning enough money to choose between food and heating, then period products quickly slip down the list of priorities.

We think that for anyone who menstruates, it is essential to have access to menstrual products, hygienic spaces in which to use them, and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma. When your period arrives each month, chances are you reach for a pad, tampon, or menstrual disc and go about your day as usual. But unfortunately for many girls/women, this is not the reality. The lack of access to these products is not just a potential health risk - it can also mean girls' education, well-being, and sometimes entire lives are affected.

Therefore, we founded our association FEM – an association for women and girls to fight period poverty and to end it once and for all. We believe every person that menstruates has a right to sanitary products. Every day we are working to put an end to period poverty by improving access to feminine hygiene products, but also address the stigma, fear, frustration and isolation that is all too often associated with having your period. Our goal is to support women and girls directly with reusable pads, and we also want to help women how to make reusable sanitary pads that are affordable and sustainable.
