Discovery Time!!
Spende geschützt
Hello beautiful people reading this. My name is Prisca, and I absolutely love telling stories, and speaking my truth. It's even better when I get to witness other people perform them. That's why I became a playwright. Since 2013 things have been going pretty well for me on that front. I've had multiple readings at different theatres in Kansas City (including The Fish Tank, and The Buffalo Room.) and my play "Cycle" was produced in the 2015 Fringe Festival at The Living Room Theatre. Writing is my passion, and calling. This summer I would like to make it a priority.
So I will be taking a sabbatical from my serving jobs to do just that. I'm calling it "Discovery Time." Why Discovery Time? I want playwriting to be my main source of income at some point, so I'm clearing out time for that this summer to find out how. I will be spending three months away from Kansas City to do that.
Random person: Where are you going?
Des Moines, IA (living there for about 2 months)
Chicago, IL about once a week
Traveling from Southern California (San Diego, and LA) to Portland, OR
Random person: Wow...that's alot of places.
Me: Yep.
Random person: Why?
Me: I would like "Cycle" to be produced in other cities. The best way that I know how to get the ball rolling on that is to have what I'm calling "fancier table reads." I would like to have these in the above mentioned cities.
Along with the table readings, I also want more time to write. Like really really write. Like hours of writing! 10-30 minutes a day of writing gets the job done, and is a wonderful discipline, but what if I had like 8 hours. I don't even think I'm going to use all those hours, but it would just be nice to have the option. As of now I have about 2 or 3 plays in my head, and I would love not only the time, but also the space to write them, and have them read. What would I write in a new environment surrounded by new people? And with more time? So while in Des Moines that will be my "job" if you will. Just writing. And as far as the west coast goes? That's why I'm taking a train from San Diego to Portland. A: to see the scenery, duh!! B: To actually say "I wrote a play on a train!!!"
Random Reader: Ok, I'm in! Wait...What are you going to use the money for?
Me: Liquor and blow.
Random Reader: OK I'M IN!!!
Me: Wait what? That was a joke.
Random Reader: (dissapointed) Oh.
Me: I'll mainly be using this for cost of living essentials. Food, rent and travel. I will be open to doing odd jobs here and their, but I would prefer not to take on a full time serving job. That would defeat the purpose of this sabbatical.
Also these "Cycle" readings; I like paying my actors and other artists something. It wouldn't be a lot, but it would at least be something. So a portion of the funds raised will go to other actors' "please feed me, I'm also pursuing my dream" fund.
Random: Ok, I can support that. When do you need the money?
Me: I leave May 30th for Des Moines. My goal is to get at least half (2,100) of the funds by then, and then other half (another 2,100) by June 30th.
Random Reader: Wow. This is like really important to you isn't it?
Me: You bet it is. When I write a play and have it produced not only do I get to do what I love and am called to do, but so do others! Like really, think about it. If a playwright is successful, that means the producer who produced it is successful, the directer who directed it is successful, the actors who got to perform in it are successful, the stage manager, lighting, costume, PA's, and let's not forget the audience members who get to see it. Everybody wins! Like have you ever thought about that? This is about way more than just me hanging out for 3 months. This is about me being fully self expressed, so others have the opportunity to do the same. The life I chose has ripple affect, and I'm happy that there is a possibility of it impacting so many people in the theatre industry. When you give to me, you will be giving to others as well.
Random Reader: What do I get if I give you money?!
Me: No need to yell.
$5-$10 my love and gratitude
$10-$20 my love and gratitude, and a personal letter from me thanking you.
$20-$40 my love and gratitude, a personal letter from me thanking you, and bi-weekly email news letter on how things are going, and what I'm learning and creating.
$50-$100+ my love and gratitude, a personal letter from me thanking you, a bi-weekly email news letter on how things are going, what I'm learning and creating. AND if you are in the areas of Des Moines, Chicago, San Diego, or LA (or if you want to be) a personal invite to the "'Cycle" readings. If you're not, that's ok too. I'm going to make sure they're streamed, so you'll either get to attend live virtually, or we'll get you a recording of it.
$200+ all the above stuff, and a personal invitation to my next private table read of one of the newest plays I will be writing this summer.
So that in a nut shell is what I'm up to, and I'm hoping to accomplish over the summer. It's going to be a wild and crazy summer to say the least, and I can't wait to take you all along for the ride!
