Get Hovak to Ulukhaktok for Tattoos
The art of Inuit Tattooing was almost lost. Hovak Johnston has worked tirelessly to bring this beloved tradition back for Inuit women across the North through the Inuit Tattoo Revitalization Project. Hovak is committed to ensuring this practice does not become endangered again.
For the next step in the Inuit Tattoo Revitalization Project journey, Hovak is planning to travel to Ulukhaktok, a very small, traditional community in the Northwest Territories. Ulukhaktok's elders have a deep well of traditional knowledge that will help to further the project throughout the North and is one of the last communities where an elder who had the old traditional tattoos had lived before passing away. Preserving cultural and traditional information is crucial in these times. It is Hovak's plan to travel with a videographer who will capture the rich moments that will no doubt unfold throughout her time in Ulukhaktok.
A great deal of the funds have been raised already. Further funding is needed to cover the costs of travel, accommodations, and logistics while in the community.
Supporting this project will mean that you are helping to bring back a sacred tradition from the brink of extinction, which is a pretty sweet thing to be a part of!
