Gabby’s Rare Disease Fundraiser

350 million people have rare diseases worldwide. I am one of those people. This is my story. Hi my name is Gabriella DiSalvo, but I prefer Gabby. I am a junior at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, New York. I was born with a condition called Myofibrillar Myopathy (MFM). This is a rare, genetic, neuromuscular disorder. It is very uncommon to be diagnosed as a child. As of 2006, there were only three recorded cases of it. Most often, symptoms begin appearing after 40 years of age. It can be described as a slowly progressive weakness in EVERY muscle in the body. When I was diagnosed, the doctors told my parents I would never walk, but I proved them wrong. I learned to walk differently than most people. As I got older, my muscles got tired quicker, so I began to shift my weight causing me to sway from side to side. This caused me to develop scoliosis. At the age of 10, my curve worsened, needing me to have a spinal fusion surgery to correct it. I was hospitalized for two months of recovery. After the surgery, I was left completely wheelchair bound. I never allow my disability to stop me though.
For almost a year now, I have been running a cooking account on Instagram called Cooking on Wheels. Since then, I have been featured on the Rachael Ray Show, NetTV Currents News, and multiple news articles .  The most important lesson that I have learned from my experience of living with MFM is if I was told there was a cure for it, some days, I would take that cure, but on most days, I would turn it down because I would never be able to have these AMAZING opportunities like having my fundraisers or sharing my love of cooking with the world. Through these events and my account, I hope to raise funds and awareness for those affected by rare, genetic diseases. Remember, every effort helps. No donation is too small. Thank you for your continued support!
