On Monday, October 20, 2014, Eric was diagnosed with a defective heart valve that was infected and constantly pumping infection into his brain and other parts of his body. As a result of this condition, Eric had suffered several tiny strokes and was at grave risk of suffering a huge stroke at any moment. To quickly address this condition, on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, Eric had open-heart surgery to get this valve replaced and to get the infection removed. Eric’s surgery went very well, and he is on his way to recovery, though there have been bumps along the way, and there will be more that will need to be navigated.
One obstacle that will need to be surmounted is the temporary effect on Eric’s financial situation. Eric’s short-term disability benefit for his full-time job will provide 50% of his income, and he will have to forfeit the income he receives from part-time endeavors (such as teaching an online college course) because he cannot currently fulfill those duties. Additionally, his wife, Jamie, will have to forfeit the income she regularly receives from babysitting because she will need to be by Eric’s side. Eric and Jamie have three girls (Claudia – 14, Ellie – 12, Sydney – 10) and the typical financial obligations associated with a family of 5 (house payment, school fees, utilities, insurance, etc.). With this situation, medical bills will increase and additional fuel, food, and other costs will be incurred by the constant need to drive back and forth to and from the hospital, which is a 35-minute drive one-way from their house.
Needless to say, Eric and Jamie will need financial help. If you are able and compelled to help Eric and Jamie to overcome this financial burden, it will be utterly appreciated. Eric and Jamie are extremely blessed to have a network of family, friends, and others who love them and are willing to support them emotionally, prayerfully, financially, and in other ways.
