The Nikia Project

The road from the Reno County Jail back into towns is dark, dangerous, and has recently resulted in a tragic accident that took the life of Nikia Thomas on March 23, 2023. 

To provide an immediate solution to protect both drivers and pedestrians being released from jail, Kansas Recovery Network has formed a partnership with Axels Taxi to create The Nikia Project. This project will provide safe rides to people being released from jail after dark at no cost to them. 

However, we all know that there is a cost especially when vehicles are involved, which is why we are asking for the help of the community. Kansas Recovery Network (as a 501c3 nonprofit) commits to holding these restricted donated funds. Any money donated to The Nikia Project will ONLY be used for The Nikia Project. Any donations received over the requested amount will be donated to the family. 

We know that this is not the only solution. We encourage all Hutchinson and Reno County citizens to make your voices heard and demand a sidewalk and street lights be installed on south Severance.  

But for now, we can work together to make our community safer for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
