Three men, all under the age of 30, were pronounced dead by Medic after being found shot to death in south Charlotte Friday morning.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) officers responded to a home on the 9500 block of China Grove Church Road, near Pineville.
Captain Chris Dozier of CMPD's Steele Creek Division is part of the team investigating the homicides.
"Officers responded to the scene and located three victims inside this residence," Dozier said outside the home. "They cleared the house and Medic did confirm that they were deceased and apparently died of apparent gunshot wounds."
Police later identified the victims as 29-year-old Naquivs Aqueece Benson, 28-year-old Jarvis Mandrell Benson and Javarius Deshawn McGee, who turned 30 the day before he was killed.
Relatives tell WBTV the Benson brothers were celebrating the birthday of McGee. Family members were to meet Naquivs Friday, but no one could get in touch with him. That's when they became concerned. Hours later police would tell them all three were found shot to death.
"It's terrible," Victim's Aunt Loketa Hood said. "Cause people lose family members - family members that matter to somebody, somebody's son, somebody's daughter. It's too much."
Relatives say the last time they saw Naquivs was on Thanksgiving. Relatives say he was in Charlotte in school learning how to become a chef.
"Naquavs made smoked turkey," Victim's Uncle Dupree Hood said. "Fried turkey, couple of desserts. He was real proud of his culinary. We were all real proud for him doing that."
Crime scene tape was surrounding the home near Sterling Elementary School. Charlotte Mecklenburg School (CMS) officials said the elementary school was not put on lockdown and dismissal was normal.
Police did not say if the home showed the marks of forced entry, or if there were any signs of struggle. Late Friday afternoon a source close to the investigation said the crime was not a random act.
Jeffrey Dukes, who lives several doors down from the crime scene, calls it perplexing.
"I never see anybody come in or out of the house at all," Dukes told WBTV.
Family members want the killer found soon and have this message for them.
"Turn yourself in," the uncle said. "Make amends, try to reconcile. Give some closure to the family."
Reverend David Cunningham is with the China Grove AME Zion Church just across the street.
"There hadn't been a murder or something of this instance to happen in this community in over 30 years," Reverend Cunningham told reporters, "So to find out this morning that something of this magnitude has happened, it has really broken my heart."
Detectives were canvassing the area for possible witnesses and crime scene search was called to collect evidence.
"We have not had any calls for service recently here specifically that address," Captain Dozier said.
Police have not released any information about what may have led to the shooting. While police are on the hunt for the killer, family members tell WBTV how they will remember Naquivs.
"His smile," the uncle said. "He was one of my favorite people."
