Arda Darakjian was a one of kind person. She was a wonderful mother, daughter, teacher and friend. Everyone who knew her knew how much full of life and joy she was.
Arda was born in February 1968. She was the youngest of three. All her life she struggled starting with her parents divorce which tore her family apart. She ended up taking care of her on her own and managed to go to university graduating with honors from American University. In the darkest of her days, feeling abandoned by her family she ended up getting attached to the wrong man and marrying him. On July 22, 1997 she bore him a beautiful baby girl Gabriella, who was the light of her life. That marriage was a sad relationship which ended up in divorce.
For years she took care of her daughter by herself. Struggling as a single working mother she managed to keep her daughter and mother happy and healthy. She used to work mornings from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as a teacher at her daughter’s school afterwards she would rush to go to her second job which was a private tutor and would not make it back home till 9 p.m. at time even later. She also worked on weekends as a choir teacher assistant to earn some extra income. After reaching home tired she would take the time to prepare a meal for her family. As well as try sit with her daughter whom she hadn’t seen all day before she goes to bed. She never got a break.
Even during the summers she would a monitor at a summer camp to be able to pay for rent.
In 2016 a year after her only daughter, Gabriella had graduated high school she was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 2B. Unable to continue school due to financial problems and having no family to support them, at the age of 19 Gabriella had to drop out of college and continue working to support her mother who was unable to work anymore due to all the pain she had been suffering.
Arda underwent many chemotherapy sessions, brachytherapy sessions (internal radiation) and radiotherapy. All those treatment took a toll on her body and by October 2017 after almost over 20 chemotherapy and 50 radiotherapy sessions her intestine burst and she had to have an emergency life-saving surgery. She ended with a colostomy and months of recovery. Through it all her daughter was the only one by her side. Going back and forth before her two jobs and the hospital.
Unfortunately, by 2019 after three year of continuously struggling with this vicious disease the cancer had metastasized towards her spinal cord and her kidneys were family which meant she had to undergo another surgery where they ended up putting tubes in her kidneys (nephrostomy tubes). By that time hope was all they had and prayer was all they practiced.
After all that pain and suffering Arda Darakjian ended up passing away on June 23, 2019. Leaving her only daughter behind by herself.
Gabriella cherished her mother, took care of her, supported her and showed her strength till the day she died.
I will never forget hearing my best friend crying on the phone as she held her mothers body in her arms after her passing for hours.
Right now Gabriella is suffering from severe trauma and anxiety due to everything has gone through. She wants to go back to school but with her full time job and her emotion and mental trauma we do not know how she will be able to manage. She still has not grieved her mothers loss. Please she wants to study nursing to help ease and help peoples pain like she did with her mother. Any kind of donation no matter how big or small it was will help her mother final wishes coming true, having her daughter graduate college. She also has hospital and funeral bills left to pay.
