This is a dedicated fundraising page for the organisation ‘A Place To Be Yourself’ (APTBY) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. APTBY is a unique drop-in and resource centre for Khmer (Cambodian) LGBTIQ+ individuals; it is a safe place where people can learn more about gender and sexuality, health care that is available to them (mental and sexual) and their rights in Cambodia. APTBY has constantly evolving programs as it seeks to always improve its services. Now APTBY is in need of your help for the exciting initiatives outlined below!
APTBY does a range of activities to change the landscape for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Siem Reap. It hosts daily drop-in sessions and offers free condoms and counselling to LGBTIQ+ people. Furthermore it raises awareness and promotes acceptance through a pioneering 2-hour Gender & Sexuality workshop. This workshop has already been delivered at a number of hotels, cafes, schools, universities and NGOs and been very well received. APTBY wants to offer this workshop to more and more people but requires funds to make this possible.
APTBY also sponsors 2 Khmer LGBTIQ+ individuals to study Professional Health Counselling in Phnom Penh. Pov and Tana (we have asked permission to use their names) have already successfully completed their first year and have one further year to complete. In their final year, Pov and Tana are required to complete 100 placement hours before graduating and becoming fully-fledged professional counsellors in Cambodia. The first year for both has been paid already, but the second year costs are as follows:
Course fees: USD$776 per person per semester (total: USD$3104)
Travel allowance (fortnightly) for Siem Reap-based student (1 year): USD$400
Accommodation (fortnightly) in Phnom Penh (1 year): USD$600
Total: USD$4104
APTBY recently lodged their official NGO registration papers with a 6-person strong, all LGBTIQ+ board.
Total: USD$1100
Other projects in the pipeline:
- Supporting Khmer LGBTIQ+ individuals to realise their worth and reach their dreams by helping them access training and education they may not otherwise be able to (English lessons, paid make-up / beauty apprenticeships, etc.). This training and education offers them a pathway to a brighter future.
APTBY cannot happen without funds. It is an organization that relies completely on the generosity of people. Any and all funds received will not only be gratefully received but will play a large part in bringing positive real change for real people.
