We hope that you are both safe and well during this ever-changing environment that we are living in.
We acknowledge that the level of anxiety amongst our community is rising and this time, it is affecting even the most rich and powerful.
However, the most vulnerable are always the poor. Not only are they defenceless against the virus but they’re also losing the battle of hunger due to loss of employment and inability to pay for medical fees. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, rickshaw drivers and labourers are all moving back to their hometown as everything is under lockdown. They are in a hopeless situation with unemployment and there is no sign of it changing anytime soon. In Barisal (South of Dhaka), there’s such a large influx of people returning only to find no food available at the markets with highly inflated prices.
As a result of this, it is time that we act for those who cannot for themselves. The funds will be used to assist families struggling to stay alive due to hunger. We know everyone’s struggling with the lockdown laws and closure of companies/universities but if there’s any amount you could contribute, it’d be of much benefit. There’s already thousands dying due to the coronavirus outbreak but the least we can do is ensure that they’re not dying of starvation.
Don’t hesitate to even chip in $1 as that is like 50 taka which is a lot to suffice a whole family. In the bigger picture, a rickshaw driver usually makes 50 taka in like 2-3 hours which they’re not being able to make now due to the lockdowns.
It is more important than ever that we continue to pull together, to look out for those most vulnerable and be generous, gracious and tolerant. Charity does not decrease wealth.
