Fundraiser for Baby Xiomara's Health

Spende geschützt
Friends -

Thank you so much for all of your love and support of baby Xio!  Words cannot express how humbled the Valles Family is by this outpouring of financial support which will allow them to pay for transportation to, and housing/apartment costs for, Philadelphia.  Michelle and Rodrigo will continue to alternate between NYC and Philadelphia every week for the foreseeable future, which at a minimum, will be many, many months of stabilizing baby Xio until she can be transferred back to NYC and begin rehabilitation of her lungs (potentially a years-long process).   We will keep everyone posted every two weeks.  Lastly, on a weekly basis 100% of funds will be transferred from my personal account to the Valles Family (full accounting of transfers available upon request).

Again, thank you for your unwavering support and do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions!

Sincerely,
David Lara

Dear Friends and Family,

Our friends Rodrigo and Michelle Valles have been challenged by the universe in ways most of us haven’t. Eight years ago, on a chilly Halloween night, Rodrigo walked Michelle to work from their apartment on the east side of Manhattan and almost never made it back home. On his walk back to the apartment, he was hit by a car and suffered a traumatic brain injury that sent him to the hospital unconscious and barely alive. Michelle didn’t know what had transpired until she got home from work the next morning and he was nowhere to be found. It’s the kind of tragedy that makes the world stop spinning. And it did. For months. But Rodrigo and Michelle don’t give up, they don’t accept the status quo. In fact, Rodrigo, a neuroscientist, and Michelle, a veterinarian, naturally kept doctors and nurses on their toes with their medical know-how. They fought like hell to prevail in the face of surgeries and a coma and not knowing how Rigo would fare even months after therapy. They persevered, and amid it all, they never asked for a thing.

And now, the universe is challenging them again via their beautiful baby girl, Xiomara (pronounced see-oh-mara, which fittingly means “famous in war” and “battle ready”). Xio made her debut into this world much earlier than expected. Born after only 24 weeks in the womb, Xio will soon celebrate her first birthday. But she is battling lung disease and respiratory issues, and has never seen the outside of a hospital except for her brief med-vac helicopter ride from New York-Presbyterian to the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. She’s been unable to breath on her own and has been hooked up to so many contraptions, mom and dad have barely been able to hold her in their arms.

While Rodrigo and Michelle are fortunate to have health insurance, it doesn’t pay for everything. They’ve been forced to rent a second apartment and have been commuting between work in NYC and baby Xio in Philadelphia, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. All of this is a significant financial burden and we want to make sure they are in the best position to support Xiomara as she battles for her life.

You can see in her fierce little eyes and piano player hands that she is ready for some living. There are many things on Xio’s to-do list. Like seeing her own room or meeting her furry, four-legged siblings or hanging out in the blowup pool with mom, dad and a monster pup named Tumbleweed.

Even when Xio is strong enough to be released, she will need to rehabilitate her lungs -- so this trio has a long journey ahead.

If you know Michelle and Rodrigo, they’re loving and competitive and inspiring and funny -- and stubborn. They like to do things on their own, but they don’t have to. We would be so appreciative if you helped them with a donation - any donation - to the following GoFundMe account.

Your love and support already means the world to them.
