Funding School Exams for these Ghanaian Children

We want to raise £1500 to pay for school exams, buy a deep freezer and support 48 children who have been neglected and alienated by their own communities due to HIV. The Ask!

We previously raised £1000 for the Motherly Love Orphanage in Kwabenya Ghana to help support them as they continue to provide children who have been ostracised from society due to HIV with the love and care that is essential for their formative years. Here are some pictures from our #visibilitymotherlylove campaign:

 

 

The Motherly Love Orphanage is specifically for children with HIV, they have been ostracised from their communities due to a virus out of their control. The orphanage directors, who live with the orphans, are also HIV positive. They have gathered these vulnerable children who are stigmatised in their communities for something out of their control and are looking to people like you to help them fight to live another day. Fortunately, they have been given a residence to house the children for now but they are in desperate need of essential supplies to support them during their formative years and we need your help.

1) Educational support

2) Food and Utilities

3) Healthcare

4) Permanent residence

Now we are raising £1500 to respond to their desperate need for a deep freezer for their kitchen.

In addition, the remainder of the money raised will go towards funding school exams for the children at the orphanage. Each exam costs 250 Ghana Cedi. We were able to pay for some of these exams on our last visit and this time round the money raised will cover the cost of 31 exams. The majority of us in the first world do not pay for exams but not everyone has that privilege, so it would fantastic if we could give these children that opportunity!

The Situation in Ghana

There are over 12 million orphans and vulnerable children across Sub-Saharan Africa, most of which are under fifteen years old. Out of this, over 1 million of these children are Ghanaian with about 4,500 of these children in orphanages (UNICEF, 2010). Demographically speaking, Ghana is a very young nation with nearly 40 per cent of the country’s population under the age of 14.

The Ghanaian Government’s report on “The Care Reform Initiative for Orphans and Vulnerable Children” launched in 2006 even admits “a number of these homes and orphanages are poorly run and more often do not comply with either national or international standards.” What makes this more disturbing is that despite this knowledge not enough has been done to rectify the issue. The fact of the matter is that these children will in some way shape or form contribute tremendously to the economy in the next 20 to 30 years. If Ghana is going to continue developing the investments in human capital development are critical, such change needs to occur from the grassroots.

Visibility Africa is a youth-led non-profit organisation created to meet the psychological and physical needs of children across Ghana. We want a future where all children living in Africa receive the care, support and attention that is essential during their formative years. All children have the right to life, survival and development, we want to change the current narrative regarding these children and help them write their own.
