Black Employee Fired Over Racial Profiling

FIRED OVER RACIAL PROFILING

Despite consistently being a top performer, Parriss was racially profiled and asked to take a “random” drug test for marijuana use.

Black people do not deserve to be treated this way and we all know in WA state the culture of marijuana is abundant. Why do black men continue to have their lives uprooted because of a legal drug, while white people profit off of its legalization?

!!Update!!

Parriss has finally found a job and is working hard to catch up with the many months of income lost. He only started his new job at the beginning of August and has only been able to pay back all of his rent and bills from May.

Although he is now making money regularly, he is three months behind on his bills and still needs some support. On top of normal expenses, he has been ticketed twice while driving the work since he has started because of problems with his car that he has been unable to address due to being unemployed for months.

We are so appreciative of everything everyone has donated and the fact he was able to keep his housing due to your donations. But it is stacking up again and he can only make back so much at a time at minimum wage. If you have anything to give, we would be so grateful.

I want to again reiterate that in WA state, white people profit heavily from selling marijuana. Further, they are able to use it without any fear of repercussions. On the other hand, black people remain in prison for marijuana charges and are not profiting from legalization. Parriss is one story of many showing that not only is there no profit for black people in this industry, but there is still punishment for many.

Original Post:

Parriss has been without a job since the beginning of May and is being threatened eviction. He is actively looking for another job, but options are limited during this time. He has leads in terms of job prospects but now he is a month behind on his bills and it is now June so more are stacking up.

Parriss has been working for Prime Express, an Amazon delivery service provider, in Sumner, WA delivering Amazon packages prior to and throughout the global pandemic. It is required upon hire that all employees pass a drug test and Parriss complied and was offered employment.

While at Prime Express, Parriss consistently ranked in the top twenty of employees based on performance alone. However, at the beginning of May, during the pandemic, he was randomly texted one night by his boss, Jeff C. Allen, and was told that he was “suspicious” of marijuana use and that Parriss would need to take another drug test the next morning before work, otherwise he would be immediately “terminated.”

This was clearly a racially motivated move, as Parriss was the only worker asked to take a test, despite the fact that most of his white coworkers smoke marijuana after work, and Mr. Allen did not provide any evidence to justify suspicion, other than a statement saying that he has “trained evaluators” who have raised concern.

Further, because Parriss was labeled “suspicious”, he was told that he could only take an OBSERVED drug test at a company run by one of Mr. Allen’s close friends, who is also white. Parriss provided a clean sample at the end of this month after being put on suspension for denying the first test, but that sample was never tested because they demanded he be observed while peeing. Parriss asked if he could take the test elsewhere and was denied.
