Studying abroad for me is an epic opportunity. From where I've been in my life, growing up in Hell, being abused every day of my life for the first 13 years, spending time in the juvenile system thanks to my dad, to joining the United States Army at 17, going to prison at 18 and serving 37 years. I am now going to school to study Human Services and Counseling. People are not getting the help that they need and I see it every day. This Public Health Study Abroad class will be epic for me because it gives me an opportunity to learn how another country operates their Health and Human Services. It will also give me a chance to get out of my country for the first time ever and celebrate my birthday overseas.
When I was released from prison just over 9 years ago a friend got out on the same day. I ran into him 7 years later and he was still on parole, homeless, strung out on drugs, with no health insurance, no ID, and no food stamps. Why? Because he has mental health issues and does not know how to communicate well with people. I took him to speak with his parole officer and by the time we left my friend had everything he should have. This was so irritating so I decided I needed to go to school and get letters behind my name to show that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to reaching people that need help. But are they willing to do what it takes to get the help that they need? That is the question.
Normally I like to spend my summers kayaking and camping in Ridgefield,Washington, but to kayak in Croatia? I've never thought that would be possible for me. Here I am with an opportunity to do just that. So if you are able to support me and my fundraiser to make this dream come true it would be greatly appreciated.
