Fukushima 3 Years On - Photobook

Donation protected
This summer, Jorel and Isaac will be embarking on an expedition to Fukushima, Japan. We will be attached to two organisations, Ishinomaki Christian Center (ICC) and Nozomi Center, for two months. Our mission is to support the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the local community who remain affected by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. This will range from activities such as clearing coastline debris and delivering food to refugee shelters, to teaching English and music to children in the afterschool day-care.

In our ongoing conversations with the organisations, this struck both of us most deeply: due to the lack of regular media coverage, international help has been falling over the years. While sensationalist news may fade away after a few days, radiation does not. The 20km-radius evacuation zone is still in place, and three years on, children are being born into families, still displaced from their original homes.

Such a visceral plight of humanity must move us. Not only to tears, but to true action. We may be all too familiar with the term 'raising awareness' through activities whose purposes are unrelated to its beneficiaries, with international charity organisations whose processes are too bureaucratic to comprehend, for citizens of developing countries whose needs we are not even entirely sure of, but apathy could never be our other alternative. We must make known the tragedies of the world, but always in a manner which is specific, nuanced and ultimately meaningful.

This is why we are doing things entirely differently by ourselves for this expedition: as undergraduates reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics, we will use our knowledge and specialisation in these fields to produce a formal report addressing the situation on the ground, for our universities and related sponsors and interested partners who support our cause. We will also compile a photography series, capturing the daily lives of the local Japanese community and the culture of the Tohoku region, hopefully to be of great worth to international community at large what is happening in Fukushima, 3 years on.

And we will need all the help we can get. Be it sharing this, or donating to our cause here , from the bottom of our hearts, please accept our heartfelt gratitude.

Thank you.
