We are a group of volunteers that regularly visit asylum seekers at the immigrant detention center in Aurora, Colorado with the goal of building relationships and being a source of comfort to them during their detention.

Some of the people we visit have families or friends in the United States, but our friend Martin has no support system in this country. He is seeking asylum in the U.S. after fleeing his home country of Cameroon.  Currently the french speaking majority in Cameroon is persecuting the English-speaking minority, resulting in increasing violence against English speakers.  Entire villages within the English-speaking western portions of Cameroon have been burned recently, sending families fleeing for their lives.  Innocent people have been kidnapped and killed.

After speaking out against this violence, Martin feared for his life and had to leave his home and family, hiding out in the jungle for nearly 3 months. He was able to escape Cameroon last fall, and then endured a harrowing 5 month journey through South and Central America, crossing the border in San Diego in early February.  He then declared himself an asylum seeker, surrendered to immigration agents, and was imprisoned in a detention center in Aurora, Colorado.

We have found one of the best immigration lawyers in the state to handle Martin's case and hopefully ensure he can remain in the U.S.  Martin’s greatest fear is being deported back to an very dangerous situation in Cameroon.  He will likely be jailed, and it's very possible he would be killed outright.

Martin was paroled in September, but recently put back into detention as ICE prepares to deport him back to Cameroon.  We cannot let this happen, as he will be in mortal danger if he returns.  We are continuing to fight on the legal front, with a stay of deportation and a motion to reopen his asylum case still pending before the Board of Immigration Appeals.

Will you consider helping him in his asylum-seeking process? Any amount will help.  $5, $10, $20 – every little bit adds up, and we cannot do this alone.  All the money we raise will allow us to continue to fight with Martin, and position us to be able to help all those who come after him.  There are many more people with similar stories that need help as well.
