Kyra Op Smile Mission to China

I am a junior at Princess Anne High School where I have become involved in our local chapter of Operation Smile. As you may know, Operation Smile is a private, non-profit organization, founded locally in Norfolk, Virginia, that devotes itself to providing medical care and reconstructive surgery to children and young adults in developing countries and the United States. Operation Smile focuses on providing free surgery for children with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other facial deformities. My involvement with the organization has been mainly through our high school association, which focuses on raising awareness and fundraising for surgeries. A surgery costs about $240.00, takes approximately 45 minutes, and can change a child’s life forever. Operation Smile currently has a presence in over 60 countries, including Ecuador, China, Kenya, the Philippines, and many more. I will be going on an Operation Smile medical mission to Lincang, which is located in the Yunnan Province of China, from October 29th to November 4th of this year. As a part of the Student Education Team on my mission, I will be responsible for teaching Burn Care and Prevention, Dental Hygiene, Nutrition, Oral Rehydration Therapy, and other Health Care Basics at the local hospitals, schools, and orphanages. I will also be spending time with patients before and after surgeries. However, in order to make an impact in the lives of these children, I will need to raise money to participate on this medical mission.
The total budget for this mission is approximately $3,500. This cost includes travel expenses, lodging, meals, immunizations, visa fees, and supplies needed for teaching and playing with the patients. Suggested donations are $100, $250, $500, $750, and $1,000, but any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated. If I have not heard back, I will check in with you within the next few weeks.
