Rachel's Mission in South Africa
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Rachel Snow and I am trying to raise money to travel to South Africa for two weeks this summer to volunteer in community development and to facilitate children’s programs. I am currently a freshman at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. I will transfer to Texas A&M College Station in the fall and plan to attend A&M’s nursing school my junior year. My goal is to graduate with a Nurse Practitioner's degree and then travel to third world countries to do mission work. I then plan to work either in the Neonatal unit of a hospital or in pediatric oncology.
Poverty, HIV/Aids, broken families, inadequate housing and school facilities, and lack of other basic necessities are just some of the barriers that millions of South African children face in their struggle for a better life. By traveling to South Africa, I will be able to help restore communities through construction of needed repairs and building relationships with the South African people. I will help older children with their English and after-school activities while motivating them to continue spending their time wisely in a safe, positive environment, helping to keep them away from the path of gangs, drugs and alcohol. HIV/AIDs is still very much a taboo topic in many South African communities, so I will also get the chance to help educate teenagers in disadvantaged communities about disease prevention.
To me the best reward of all is knowing that I made a difference in someone's life by making them smile, laugh, or even have a small glimpse of hope for the future. The opportunity to go to South Africa and experience that this summer will give me a look at what I hope to do for the rest of my life, and that is to help people.
Please help me get to South Africa!
I will be traveling with an organization called ISV (International Student Volunteers). ISV is an established non-profit Public Benefit Charity and their mission is to support sustainable development initiatives around the world through life-changing volunteer and responsible adventure travel programs designed to positively change our world and to educate, inspire and result in more active global citizens. I invite you to go to their website, www.isvolunteers.org to learn more about all they are doing around the world.
The two week program costs: $2,295
Transportation costs: $2,500
Total: $4,795
