Este es una campaña de levantar fondos para ayudarnos a pagar parte de los gastos médicos de nuestro papá Alexander Silva (Vovo Quim como le dicen sus nietos), quien  estuvo 11 días en terapia intensiva, luego de haber sido sometido a tres intervenciones quirúrgicas en nueve días y aún necesita una cuarta operación dentro de algunas semanas.

 

La primera cirugía programada fue el 4 de abril vía laparoscopia para corregir una hernia inguinal, siendo dado de alta tras una noche de observación.

 

La mañana del 7 de abril fue admitido en la clínica de nuevo con una obstrucción intestinal y un cuadro de deshidratación severa que estaba ocasionando deficiencia renal. La obstrucción intestinal se debía a una peritonitis que no pudo ser atendida hasta superar la deficiencia renal y que le causó septicemia.

 

La tarde del 8 de abril fue intervenido quirúrgicamente por segunda vez para realizar una anastomosis, donde se conectó lateralmente el intestino delgado y el grueso, para así reparar la obstrucción intestinal. Desde ese día ingresó a terapia intensiva debido al estado crítico y subsecuentes complicaciones.

 

El 12 de abril fue intervenido por tercera vez, para realizar una ileostomía porque la anastomosis presentó una fuga causando nuevas complicaciones.

 

El cuadro postoperatorio luego de tres cirugías no ha sido sencillo, ha presentado arritmia cardiaca e hipertensión arterial que han requerido cuidados médicos y medicinas adicionales. También ha necesitado donaciones de sangre, plaquetas y alimentación intravenosa para poder empezar el proceso de recuperación.

 

Gracias a Dios ya salió del peligro y se encuentra muy bien de ánimo. Luego de pasar dos semanas en cama necesitará rehabilitación con fisioterapeutas y mantener por algunas semanas la ileostomía, mientras terminan de sanar su intestino y su colon. Así como un largo tratamiento médico que ayude a terminar con la infección por septicemia y las complicaciones adicionales.

 

Como todo este proceso forma parte de un mismo siniestro, dentro de las letras pequeñas de las pólizas de seguro, la cobertura se agotó después de la segunda operación. Queda pendiente por cubrir algunos gastos de este proceso, así como la intervención futura y todo lo asociado a su recuperación que no será cubierto por dicha póliza.

 

Gracias a que históricamente ha tenido buena salud, a su pasado deportista y al cariño de toda su familia y amigos, Vovo promete una recuperación tan rápida como ha sido su evolución desde que ingresó a terapia intensiva, pese a tantas cirugías y complicaciones a sus 72 años de edad.

 

Nuestros padres son unos inmigrantes de origen portugues, que decidieron echar raíces en Venezuela casándose en este país, creando y criando una familia. Lamentablemente Venezuela se encuentra en medio de una grave crisis humanitaria compleja y sin la existencia de un sistema de salud público, obligando a los pacientes acudir a servicios de salud privados. Debido a esta crisis, hace dos años perdieron su póliza de seguros histórica, obligados a contratar una nueva con un límite de cobertura mucho menor por su avanzada edad.

 

Con tu aporte ayudarás a que el Vovo Quim luego de su próxima cuarta cirugía, pueda volver a hacer lo que más le ha gustado durante los últimos años, que es jugar, hacer ejercicios y deportes con sus nietos Sophia, Mathieu, William y Lauren junto a la Vovo Lucy.

This is a campaign to raise funds to help us pay part of the medical expenses of our father Alexandre Silva (“Vovo Quim” as his grandchildren call him), who has spent 11 days in intensive care after having undergone three surgeries in nine days and is awaiting at least one more shortly.

 

“Vovo” was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, the first scheduled surgery was on April 4th via laparoscopy to correct the hernia, and he was discharged after one night of observation.

 

On the morning of April 7, he was admitted to the hospital again with an intestinal obstruction and severe dehydration that was causing kidney failure. The intestinal obstruction was due to peritonitis that could not be treated until the renal deficiency was overcome, and that caused sepsis.

 

On April 8, he underwent surgery for the second time to perform an anastomosis, where the small and large intestines were connected laterally to repair the intestinal obstruction. Following the surgery, he was not responding well and was placed in intensive care due to his critical condition due to subsequent complications. On April 12, he underwent surgery for the third time to perform an ileostomy, because the anastomosis leaked, causing additional complications.

(An ileostomy is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that’s made during surgery. It's usually needed because a problem is causing the ileum not to work properly).

 

Since the first surgery, he has needed blood transfusions, platelets, and intravenous feeding to start the recovery process. The postoperative process after three surgeries has not been easy; he has presented cardiac arrhythmia and arterial hypertension that have required medical care and additional medicines.

 

After spending weeks in bed, he will need rehabilitation with physical therapists and maintain the ileostomy for a few more weeks during his intestine and colon heal. He will also need extensive medical treatments to help to end the septicemia infection and the additional complications.

 

The surgery was part of the initial insurance claim, but within the fine print of the insurance policies, the coverage was exhausted after the second operation. This has left the family responsible to cover out of pocket the additional surgeries and treatments as well as the future intervention and rehabilitation associated with his recovery (which will not be covered by the insurance).

 

Our parents are immigrants of Portuguese origin who decided to put down roots in Venezuela by marrying in this country, creating and raising a family. Unfortunately, Venezuela is in the midst of a complex, severe humanitarian crisis and without the existence of a public health system, forcing patients to go to private health services. Because of this crisis, two years ago they lost their historical insurance policy, forced to contract a new one with a much lower coverage limit due to their advanced age.

 

Thank God he is out of danger and is in very good spirits. He has historically been in good health, while being active and playing soccer, surrounded by the love of all his family and friends, “Vovo” has stabilized and now promises a recovery despite so many surgeries and complications at 72 years of age.
