For over a year, I discovered that My son and I son have been suffering from lead and other toxins from construction that my building management subjected Us to.
I am a single Mom, breast cancer survivor, and my son, Owen, who has asthma, lived for the past year in a very toxic and unhealthy environment.
In late Spring 2017 and without my knowledge, lead and toxic dust coated my apartment. Construction was taking place in the neighboring apartment – but, with the approval of the building’s management, it had been taking place without proper permits or proper protection plan in place. They did not cover the walls or safeguard her apartment as according to the standard practices required by the Tenants Protection Plan and NY Local Law 1 ; all that separated my apartment from the neighboring apartment was a quarter-inch of wood paneling. Lead and toxic dust became trapped in my walls and floors and seeped into all of the cloth furnishings because of poor work practices.
My son and I have spent the past year sick with unexplained symptoms and; a spot showed up on myy bi-annual breast cancer tests; it became so bad that my son could no longer live in their home for an extended period. The Dept of Health and HPD inspectors visited the apartment for over a five month period and declared it tested high levels of lead and that both my son and I suffered with rashes, and both tested positive for lead and arsenic from construction dust. Even our pets became ill and one died and the vet suspects it was due to the toxins!
The only way to rectify this crisis is to take my landlord to court. It took court orders and major clean up and repairs to seal up the toxic walls and floors, so my son and I could return home to a normal life. During this period I withheld rent and feels they retaliated and now are trying to evict Me for non-payment. I needs our help raising monies to pay for the expenses stemming from this unfair civil action.
I am self employed and a devoted mother, I volunteer and constantly working within my community to create a better future for those around Me and to safeguard this never happens to anyone else. Thank You for caring and sharing.
