For Fiza...

On the 21st August, 2018, my wife & mother of our 3 beautiful children, Fiza Nauman Sheikh, left this world after 33 years to return to her Creator. Over the past few weeks since her very sudden and unexpected demise, there has been an outpour of emotion from all over the world. As some of you may or may not know, this is because Fiza was loved by so many, mainly due to her very own caring, selfless and affectionate nature for others. She has been described as 'angelic', 'the most beautiful soul', 'irreplaceable', 'a special person', 'an enlightened being', just to quote some. I cannot describe what she meant to me, but one word that comes to mind is 'example'...an example of the perfect wife, mother, daughter (in-law), granddaughter, sister (in-law), cousin, niece, auntie, student, but above all, friend. Not only did she fulfil all these roles to the fullest, but she possessed all the qualities of a wonderful friend, be it to her husband or to someone she has met a handful of times. Her smile, contagious. Her personality, flawless. A person with a heart of gold, but has now left behind many broken & weeping hearts that could never be mended, but seek comfort in the unforgettable memories we all shared at some point with her.
Now this cause is not for someone's life, but more for Fiza's soul. Although she may not be among us in person, she leaves behind plenty of good deeds that we can all learn from. She was very charitable, be it with her time & wisdom, or with whatever financial means she had. I feel it is my duty to continue her efforts with ceaseless charity (Sadaqah-Jariyah) so she can continue to reap the benefits in the Hereafter, as may we. I have initiated plans to help the less fortunate in her hometown of Shikarpur, Pakistan, which is ridden with poverty and is a place that was very close to her heart. It is a place that experiences very hot weather, so some initiatives include building water-wells in several points across the town, including outside a girl's school which has no access to cold drinking water. Another school has no fans in the classrooms and so rely solely on the open windows for some fresh cooler air. A poor neighbour known to her family had his house demolished from recent floods and so before she passed, she promised to help re-build the structure and unbeknown to me, had already provided with some financial help for the foundations of their home.
Religion and education played a major part in Fiza's upbringing and so, other projects I wish to pursue at some point are helping a student at her university complete his/her degree by providing some sort of financial support (I have been in touch with some of Fiza's friends who are now teachers at her former university to discuss the idea of a scholarship in her name). Another idea was to erect a small place of worship on the highway that she would so often travel along when going to university from home. I have come to know that there is a huge effort being made in Malawi, a country in East Africa, where there is extreme poverty, so this is another region where I plan to donate directly through someone I've been introduced to who is actively helping to rebuild communities there.
These are some of the plans I have thought of and discussed with Fiza's family and friends who will do all they can to fulfil OUR efforts in shaa Allah (feel free to contact me if you have other ideas that should be considered). I plan to go back to Pakistan with our children in December to visit her family and to see the development of these projects and will in shaa Allah be able to share updates with you alI. I cannot put an amount as to how much I wish to raise for this cause, nor can I break down how much shall be allocated to each project. Irrespective of the amount we manage to raise together, the aim is to help provide basic rights such as clean water, fresh-air and shelter.
Many of us may never come to terms with Fiza's departure. Although she leaves us heartbroken, she gave me the gift of 3 beautiful angels and the rest of us plenty of fond memories and so much positivity for whoever's life she touched. I feel this is giving back just a little to someone who deserves so much more, & in shaa Allah she shall receive it in the Hereafter where I pray we all meet again.
