Fondo de Beca Filiberto Ojeda Ríos

In order to create change we must be willing to be the change! 

In practicing our principles of solidarity, it is with joy that we, Comité Boricua en La Diáspora, want to announce that we will be awarding someone on the island with el Fondo de Beca Filiberto Ojeda Rios, which is a small scholarship of at least $500 dollars that we have already raised. With your help we’d love to be able to give more! 

We would like to award this scholarship to a student that is specifically attending the The University of Puerto Rico, mainly due to the fact that “The UPR” has been under systematic attack for decades, and in recent years has had funding cut due to austerity measures imposed by the federal fiscal control board. Outside of that, the yearly tuition hikes have continued to make it difficult for the most marginalized communities on the island to gain access to the university, which is the public higher education system on the archipelago. We would like to award this scholarship to someone from the community, not someone who already would have the means to attend the university. We want our people, to be able to reclaim space, one student at a time. 

We understand that $500 isn’t much in terms of lifting the financial burden that comes with higher education, which is why we are asking for your support. We have already come up with $500 and we are asking that you help by contributing what you can so that we can raise the pot and be able to truly make a small difference in someone’s life. 

We’re doing this as an act of solidarity from the diaspora to the island. We want to see our people remain on the island and to be able to continue being a contributing member to the Archipelago of Puerto Rico.

No amount is too small, and if you are able to find it in yourselves to be part of contributing to someone from our motherland the opportunity to remain there, to continue contributing to our nation and our people, it would be greatly appreciated.
