Flood Relief for the Janks Family

2020 is proving to be a trying year for the human race, and for those in the Great Lakes Bay region, it got a little bit worse last week with the devastating floods that occurred.  When families were told to evacuate on May 19th because of the imminent failure of the Smallwood, Edenville and Sanford dams after record setting rainfall, I suspect many thought they'd leave their homes to come home to water in the basement, and the annoyance of having to clean up and redo a few things.  We knew it wouldn't be a good situation, but I don't think any of us were prepared for the widespread damage and devastation it would cause.    Some of us returned home to little or no damage.  For others like my brother Keith and his family including  wife Misty, two young daughters, three dogs and two cats - that was not the case. They returned home a mess to clean up and no home to live in.

The flooding that occurred completely filled Keith and Misty's finished basement and reached their family room on the main floor.  On May 22nd, the building inspector condemned their house due to major structural damages to the foundation.  Until this is fixed, they cannot legally or safely reside in their home.  Not only does the foundation need to be fixed, they have to replace the electrical box and all wiring from their basement to their family room, replace their furnace, hot water heater, A/C unit, washer, dryer, remediate any potential hazards, and rebuild from their basement to their family room. They will need to pay licensed contractors for these fixes due to building codes.  Insurance is not covering these costs.  They've lost furniture, food, and many irreplaceable memories.   On top of all of this, they are without a home to live in with their daughters and pets, and temporarily staying at a friend's house until another financially viable option can be found.  So thankful they have good friends!
