Flint Kids' Literacy Campaign

Tax deductible

Hearts across Michigan go out to Flint children
and people have asked how they can help.

Would you spend a few dollars to help Flint pediatricians buy one or two books for children under the age of six who has been exposed to lead contaminated water?

How can that help, you might ask?

Michigan Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics (MIAAP) is working in four key areas to help Flint children – health, nutrition, education and literacy.  One area that needs your assistance is a campaign to help with Flint’s children’s long term literacy.  Pediatricians use age-appropriate books during pediatric visits to help identify developmental delays and encourage good reading habits among parents and children.  We’d like to put one or two books into the hands of every child in that young age group.  With approximately 9,000 children exposed, that’s a lot of books.

By handing out books, our pediatricians are not only assessing potential developmental delays caused by lead poisoning, they’re also providing reading and learning opportunities.  It’s an immensely important step in helping to mitigate the damage caused the contaminated water.

MIAAP’s Pediatric Foundation has provided a grant to launch the effort, called “Reach Out and Read for Flint Children.”   We thank you in advance for your donation of a few dollars to help buy a book for a Flint child.
