Fionnsdad- supporting children with cancer

Spende geschützt
In March 2020 our son Fionnlagh (pronounced Finley) or Fionn (Fin) was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. You can read all about Fionn's story and the full details of his case and treatment in "Our Story ."  To have to deal with cancer at the age of 12 is unbelievably difficult so I set up Fionnsdad  as a way to give something back to the amazing people and organisations that supported us through this terrible journey.

Cancer treatment can be very brutal, seemingly inhumane and incredibly frightening, especially when you're just a child. This means parents are always present, coming, going and living in the hospital alongside their children throughout the treatment process. It would obviously be impossible to learn the names of all the adults in attendance and so medical staff, quite rightly, name the adults by their relationship to the patient; in my case, Fionn's Dad. This seems only right and proper. After all, the key person in all of this is the patient and so I was happy and honoured to be referred to and addressed simply as Fionn's Dad.

You can read about Fionn's story and his treatment on our website:Fionnsdad

In these difficult times, which have been made so challenging by the Covid-19 Pandemic, we are on a mission to raise as much money as possible in support of a specific group of charities. We want to assist their work into better cancer treatments, better understanding and better support for both the children affected and their families.  All monies raised will be divided equally between the following:

Cancer Research UK

Birmingham Children's Hospital

Teenage Cancer Trust

CLIC Sargent

The Fionnsdad Fundraising Challenge- Summer 2021

Now that Fionn has recovered from his treatment we have created our own fundraising challenge called:

The 39 Steps

Please click on the link to see the challenge fully explained.

When trying to think of a suitable title for our challenge, the final number of 39 reminded me of John Buchan's famous thriller, "The Thirty-Nine Steps," which is also set, partly, in Scotland. We aim to complete our 39 mountains in around 5 weeks, starting at the beginning of July 2021.

As the map shows, some are close together and it will be possible to do up to 3 or even 4 in one expedition but others are quite isolated and will involve long walks, ferry rides, mountain bikes and camping over a few days. We will record the entire challenge on our Blog to show progress and celebrate each step towards completion.

Having climbed more than 240 of these mountains already I can assure everyone that this is a serious and major undertaking. We will publish further plans, routes and schedules later but early estimations show that we expect to climb more than 24,500m during the course of the 5 weeks. This is over 80,000 feet and is equivalent to climbing Mt. Everest 2.7 times or Ben Nevis more than 18 times! This is why we need your support.
