Dear friends, we're almost finished!  Last year we raised enough money to nearly complete our first retreat center facility at MorningSun Community, the Barn. The Barn is allowing us to move from summer-only programming to retreats throughout the year.  This past summer and fall, we've already held our first retreats inside!

MorningSun Community is a residential mindfulness center that hosts retreats to foster personal growth and compassion for all people and the Earth, in the Plum Village tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.  For two years now, our team of enthusiastic volunteers, led by Michael and Fern, has been making this dream retreat center a reality!

Last year, with all of your incredible support, we built and fully furnished 5 gorgeous bedrooms, three bathrooms, a functional kitchen, and a gathering hall!   The bedrooms and entire upstairs have ecologically harvested bamboo flooring, and look gorgeous!   Our kitchen has beautiful wood counter tops, an industrial grade stove, and a full sized fridge. We installed a well (500 feet deep!), installed a septic system, and brought electricity lines out several hundred feet from the neighborhood. People have been staying in the cozy bedrooms and we are using the gathering hall during days of mindfulness and retreats.

Over the summer, we held our first retreats in the Barn, starting with an Educators Retreat!  This was followed by a young adult Wake Up retreat, a Family retreat, and another family weekend retreat in the fall. We started offering monthly mindful living weekend retreats, and people are enjoying the opportunity to deepen in practice.  Local Sanghas are invited to come share a weekend retreat together, under the care and support of MorningSun staff and teachers. Many more retreats are scheduled throughout 2020 because people can stay year round in the Barn!

We are deeply grateful for the community's financial and voluntary support to help make this building possible! Our dream of a full retreat center that offers mindfulness programming throughout the year for many hundreds of people has become a reality!

FINISHING THE BARN

This year, we are determined to finish the rest of the building tasks. This includes installing flooring in the gathering hall, installing a fully accessible bathroom and bedroom on the first floor, finishing plastering and painting throughout the building, window trims, finishing the exterior siding, and other miscellaneous tasks.  Also, we are dedicated to installing solar panels so that our retreat center runs off of renewable energy!

It's amazing that we are doing all the building with our own hands!  With over 50 volunteers working together to help build, the Barn is truly a community work of art.

Now we just need your support to help us complete the next steps so we can finish the Barn by next year. Your support will give us the material support and motivational burst of energy to keep working and finish this thing!

COSTS:
Last year, we raised $92,000 which covered the majority of all of our building.  Our building costs ran $20,000 more than expected for contracted labor (electrical, well and septic installations), and an additional $12,000 of our initial construction budget was spent to furnish the bedrooms, hall and kitchen for retreats during the summer.

Now, to finish the building, we need to raise $39,000 by next year. Here is the breakdown:

Interior:  $9,540
- This includes window trim,  woodstove, bamboo flooring in the gathering hall,  accessible bathroom and bedroom on first floor (shower, sink, tiles, toilet, etc.) plaster, paint, room heaters, etc

Exterior: $3,100
- This includes siding, gathering hall door, hall window, drainage gravel, topsoil, paint, entry roof extension, etc.

Solar Panels: $13,000
- Explained below (includes federal rebates)

Construction Supervising labor: $4,000
- We depend on expertise and project management to guide volunteers

Repay Building Loans: $8,000
- We took out loans to pay for necessary building costs, including furnishing the interior of the building

MorningSun Admin Team: $20,000
- Next year we will be holding more specialized 5 day retreats and weekends of mindfulness throughout the year!  Our admin team will launch this new chapter of retreats. (see below)

Crowdfunding Credit Card Fees (2.9%): 1,150

TOTAL:  $59,000

SOLAR POWERED!

The Barn will be fully solar powered with 18 panels on the roof!  We are committed to investing in eco-conscious living for our community, and for our planet. The Barn will have Wifi, heated plumbing, and other accessories for simple, comfortable living.

The solar power system costs $17,500 in total.  We will apply for a federal tax credit of 27% that offers a reduction of about $4,700 if we have a third party  to purchase the panels. We will continue exploring the best options for our community to be sourced with renewable energy power.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT TEAM:

MorningSun will begin offering retreats year round to share the practice and teachings of mindfulness more robustly. This will take the coordination, responsibility, and professional care of a small team of administrators, including Spiritual Program Director (Fern), Business Manager (Michael), and and a part time administrator to oversee the retreat center's daily running and responsibilities.
