Help Findlay raise $2000 for his friends at the Royal Columbian NICU.
Findlay is one lucky little boy. We are so thrilled that he is turning 1 and he is here in Sydney, a healthy and happy little fellow - and it's all with thanks to the incredible team at Royal Columbian NICU.
A year ago, we got the call that we weren’t expecting. We were told that our boy was coming, early. Really early. And so, within a matter of 4 hours, we were on a plane to Canada to be there with him.
During our stay at Royal Columbian Hospital, we saw first-hand the benefit of what we now know as skin to skin, or kangaroo care. The simple act of holding your baby to your skin, heart to heart, is vital to their continued growth and development.
Due to the complexities of Findlay’s oxygen needs, it took 4-6 highly trained respitory therapists and senior nurses to get Findlay out of his incubator, and onto our chests. Given the difficulty in moving him, we would then sit with him placed gently onto our chests for 3-4 hours at a time. We got to do this once a day for the first 60 days, and then we were able to start moving him a little more freely as his oxygen requirements eased.
As you can imagine, a comfortable chair is pretty vital when you have to sit in one spot for hours on end.
Parents in the NICU are going through the ringer every day, while we were there, there were up to 28 babies on the ward,
and only three comfortable reclining seats.
Instead of gifts for Findlay, and should you wish, we have set up a fundraising page to try and raise the $2,000 it costs for a new chair at the Royal Columbian NICU, ensuring that the future parents and their precious little ones can get the benefit of skin to skin too.
