Eric Gordon – Chronicler of Camden: Film appeal

Donation protected
Film about the legendary Eric Gordon, founding editor of the Camden New Journal

Help make it happen

This film will add Eric’s name to Platform Films  list of fantastic titles, covering peace films, Ireland, trade unions and social history.

This one is about what Eric called his “Jewish, individualist and communist” life and will chart his experiences of growing up in working class Manchester, his transition from Rabbi training to communism, the years he and his family spent in China that ended in his arrest and house detention as a spy, his return to London and work at the Daily Herald and the Camden Journal. A 16-month strike there led to the founding of the Camden New Journal, where he stayed until he died, aged 89, in April 2021.

This film is about an extraordinary life of an individual that history will remember as a pillar of Camden’s community, our community. Even though Eric is no longer with us, the CNJ remains an indispensable arm of our political struggle for justice, democracy and equality.

The film will be based on extensive interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours of the CNJ’s offices; archival footage including a 1980 Thames TV film on the Camden Journal, the unveiling by Eric of a memorial to Far Eastern POWs at Mornington Crescent, an interview with Eric on the St Pancras Rent Strike and other film footage about issues related to Eric’s experiences.

We also filmed at the memorial event for Eric held at the end of June 2021 in St Mark’s Church, Primrose Hill.

We have filmed 15 interviews so far, but now need funds to complete this project – to pay for further filming, film archive copyright, music composition and editing.

So this advance notice of the film comes with a request for donations in order to make the total of £20,000 that we need. This fundraiser is for the first £10,000

Please donate whatever you can. Small amounts quickly add up.  All donors will be credited in the final film.
