As news of the worsening conditions related to Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads, there has been widespread panic across the United States and the world. Grocery stores are running out of staples of all kinds—even the world’s largest retailers, Walmart & Amazon, are experiencing massive supply chain disruptions.
In a recent interview, 33-year-old Sara Tucker shared her ongoing experience battling COVID-19. After 9 days with a fever of 100+ degrees, severe body aches she describes as “the worst imaginable,” shortness of breath, and a pneumonia diagnosis, she sometimes wonders, “Am I going to get better?”
Sara is young and the chances are great that she will recover.
But what if she had been part of the high-risk elderly population? The World Health Organization has stated that older people and those with underlying health conditions are about twice as likely to develop serious outcomes versus younger, healthier people.
Vulnerable seniors are at the greatest risk amid COVID-19. Local Meals on Wheels programs are on the front lines every day, focused on doing all they can to keep older Americans safe and nourished in communities across the country. The costs and efforts needed to protect seniors from COVID-19 require additional emergency funds.
A team of classmates from The University of Texas - San Antonio (UTSA) wants to help our at-risk elderly population, so we have created a fundraiser to benefit Meals on Wheels COVID-19 Response Fund (mow.org) as they come alongside our most at-risk neighbors to provide a little bit of certainty for them nutritionally during these uncertain times.
