Face Masks for Restaurant Frontline

As cooks, we are taught to continually search for tasks. And as chefs, we are constantly improving our craft and adapting. Since being furloughed in March from my position, I’ve worked on honing my inner “seamstress” via YouTube tutorials. That has helped me focus most of my time and efforts into producing non-medical face masks for friends, families, and more importantly, the brave people continuing to feed guests.

My first obstacle was finding the equipment needed to do the task. The Fream family provided their sewing machine for the cause. From there it’s been a community support project from local people providing fabric, thread, and other supplies. Big thanks to the Andersen Family from Kirkland, and Jordan Jones in Wallingford. Their generosity have granted the first donations to various local restaurants in Seattle, as well as, to families all around the state of Washington.
While this is only a small role I can play during these difficult times, from my experience within the industry, I have learned to keep pushing through until the very end. It hurts me to see our industry, that I love so much, face an uncertain future. And while we wait and hope for a smooth recovery, I’ll keep sewing.

Up until this point, my roommate Ray Gomez and I have been funding this project on our own. Any donation you can make will go a long way to keep families as safe as we possibly can.
