Friends of Stratford White House

The Friends of the Stratford White House is a group of local residents concerned about the proposed development of the Stratford White House (265 St David Street), an historic landmark in Stratford for over 150 years. Our mission is to preserve this iconic heritage property for the future generations of Stratford residents and visitors.

The Stratford White House, a portion of which was built in the 1860s, is currently listed for sale as a development opportunity that would see the creation of three new lots by bending the setback rules, and the destruction of the current gardens and circular drive. This proposed development of the Stratford White House was turned down by the City of Stratford’s Committee of Adjustment in August 2015.

The current owners have appealed this decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. In January 2016 the Friends succeeded in having the OMB adjourn the hearing until May 12 and 13, and are currently preparing their case. The City has so far declined to appear at the hearing to defend the decision of its Committee of Adjustment and the Friends are fighting the case on their own.

The Friends need your help to prevent the loss of this heritage property – one of the last few big houses built in the 1800’s on large lots with sweeping, beautiful grounds and gardens. You can help by contributing to the costs of the Friends’ legal battle.

Please join us to save one of Stratford’s oldest and grandest heritage properties. We believe the proposed development is contrary to the City’s Official Plan commitments to protect and preserve heritage resources and areas.  We believe it’s a bad precedent, and unwise for a town that brands itself as a centre for culture and heritage.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you Mr. Larson for your input.  We are very open to receiving information about the Whitehouse property.  If any of the historical background information appearing here turns out to be  inaccurate, we will amend it.

For people interested in the history of this wonderful property, the Stratford archives and other public sources are the best source of information.

As far as the OMB proceedings go, we don't want to argue the case here.   You can get information about the OMB here:   http://elto.gov.on.ca/omb/   And you can get information about the Whitehouse appeal here: http://elto.gov.on.ca/omb/e-status/

We encourage everyone to review the case and decide for yourself whether the owner's plan for the property is a good plan.  Does it reflect what you to believe is good land use planning?  If not, please consider supporting us.
