Hello friends!
My name is Hank and I am a 2nd-year master’s student in mechanical engineering at the University of Toronto. This summer, I will be traveling to Tanzania for two months to serve the Tanzanian community by repairing broken medical equipment at the local Tanzanian hospitals, and I need your help to raise $2500CAD for the trip.
A little background:
Most of the hospital equipment used in developing countries are donated. However, they face a great deficit of skilled technicians to install, maintain and repair medical equipment. As a result, medical equipment essential for diagnosing diseases, performing surgeries, and sterilizing tools quickly become unserviceable thereby compromising the quality of care that can be delivered to the patients at the hospitals. It is estimated that up to 40% of critical medical equipment in Tanzania is in need of a repair or replacement. Hence, the objective of this summer program is to first, train students and professionals in STEM fields on medical instrumentation and then to place them in the local hospitals to repair medical equipment and to share their knowledge with local hospital staff. To give you an idea of the impact of the work, the EWH’s 2017 Tanzania Summer Institute Report states that 24 participants collectively repaired 355 pieces of equipment in 11 hospitals throughout Tanzania totaling an approximate $710 000 USD worth of repair services.
Why I want to go:
I have a genuine desire to improve the quality of healthcare through technology both here and abroad and so I see this as an invaluable learning opportunity to learn about healthcare in the developing world and medical instrumentation. Additionally, I see this volunteer trip as an opportunity to utilize and apply my engineering skills acquired over the years to make a small but significant contribution to improving the quality of care delivered in the Tanzanian hospitals. Ever since I heard about this opportunity 3 years ago, I had the desire to go and it never really left me. Now that this opportunity has become a reality for me, just thinking about it gets my heart racing!
Here’s a breakdown of the total costs:
