Help Young Joon fight for his life!
Young Joon Choi is an 8 year old second-grader who lives in Honduras. He has always been a happy and healthy child until recently when he suddenly suffered an unbearable headache which lead his parents to seek emergency medical attention for him.
On March 14th he was admitted to the hospital due to a sudden brain hemorrhage and underwent emergency brain surgery. A few hours later while in recovery he suffered another stroke for which he needed a second intervention including a craniectomy (part of his skull was removed to relieve pressure; this piece of skull is now in his abdomen until it can be safely placed back on his skull).
The doctors in the Honduran hospital had never seen a case such as this in a child so they did extensive and costly testing to determine the cause. They have since diagnosed Young Joon with vasculitis and believe this caused the brain hemorrhage. They will eventually do a biopsy to determine the cause of the vasculitis.
Young Joon remained heavily sedated for about 2 weeks after the surgeries under very strict medical monitoring so that his brain swelling could reduce and his blood pressure stabilize. As the medical team began to reduce the sedatives, they also performed a tracheotomy to improve breathing that was hindered by phlegm.
Young Joon has now been in the intensive care unit of a private hospital for more than two weeks. He is expected to be moved out of the ICU in the coming days but will continue to need treatments and therapies to recover from the stroke, as well as at least one more surgery to return the piece of skull to its place.
With no family medical insurance and insufficient Honduran public health services, the family is in a very difficult financial situation, especially since the father recently became unemployed when the company he worked for closed. They desperately need your help so that Young Joon can continue to receive the medical treatment he needs.
