This is Maria Elvira, she lives in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and has been diagnosed with breast cancer stage 2 (still awaiting further testing and final biopsy results) yesterday January 6th, 2020. However, the preliminary biopsy results suggest it is at least stage 2 and very aggressive. She is a a new mother to a 4 month old baby girl and only 34 years old. Two years ago she watched her own mother fight breast cancer and after surgery and chemotherapy, she has been cancer free for 2 years. 

In October 2020, she felt a lump on her right breast and told her gynecologist about it. Her gynecologist dismissed her and told her it was plugged duct from breastfeeding. However, she felt something was not right.  So, she decided to get a second opinion.  This past December 2020, she underwent a right breast biopsy and ultrasound, which confirmed a mass/tumor on her right breast and her biggest fear, she has breast cancer and it is very aggressive. She is currently undergoing testing and awaiting the final biopsy results to confirm the exact type of cancer and whether it is at a more advanced stage. She was told by her oncologist that she needs a double mastectomy surgery(removal of both breasts) and most likely lymph nodes removed ASAP!

Unfortunately, the health care system in Mexico is nothing like in the United States. No surgery can take place without payment. Hospitals are filled with COVID patients and public hospitals are not taking ANY patients. She must have her surgery at a private hospital which requires payment upfront, even in the case of an emergency.  Her oncologist has given her 10 days to collect the money for the surgery. But, as you may know, time is of the essence. With the aggressiveness of the cancer, we do not know how much time we have. She will not only need money for the surgery, but also for chemotherapy, medications, and after care expenses.

Esta es María Elvira, mi prima que vive en Hermosillo, Sonora, México. Ayer, 6 de enero de 2020, le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama en etapa 2 (aún en espera de más pruebas y resultados finales de la biopsia). Sin embargo, los resultados preliminares de la biopsia sugieren que está al menos en etapa 2 y es muy agresiva. Ella es una nueva madre de una niña de 4 meses y solo tiene 34 años. Hace dos años vio a su propia madre luchar contra el cáncer de mama y después de la cirugía y la quimioterapia, ha estado libre de cáncer durante 2 años.

En octubre de 2020, sintió un bulto en su seno derecho y se lo contó a su ginecóloga. Su ginecóloga la despidió y le dijo que era un conducto obstruido por la lactancia. Sin embargo, sintió que algo no estaba bien. Entonces, decidió buscar una segunda opinión. El pasado diciembre de 2020, se sometió a una biopsia de mama derecha y ultrasonido que confirmó una masa / tumor en su pecho derecho y confirmio su mayor temor, tiene cáncer de mama y es muy agresivo. Actualmente se está sometiendo a pruebas y está esperando los resultados finales de la biopsia para confirmar el tipo exacto de cáncer y si se encuentra en una etapa más avanzada. Su oncólogo le dijo que necesita una cirugía de mastectomía doble (extirpación de ambos senos) y lo más probable es que se extirpen los ganglios linfáticos lo antes posible.

Desafortunadamente, el sistema de salud en México no se parece en nada al de Estados Unidos. Ninguna cirugía puede realizarse sin pago. Los hospitales están llenos de pacientes COVID y los hospitales públicos no aceptan NINGÚN paciente. Debe someterse a la cirugía en un hospital privado que requiere el pago por adelantado, incluso en caso de emergencia. Su oncólogo le ha dado 10 días para juntar el dinero de la cirugía. Pero, como sabrá, moverse rapido y sumeterse a surgeria de inmediato es esencial. Con la agresividad del cáncer, no sabemos cuánto tiempo tenemos. No solo necesitará dinero para la cirugía, sino también para la quimioterapia, los medicamentos y los gastos de cuidados posteriores.
