New Years Day 2016 is a day I will never forget. I first met Elmo, a large senior mixed breed dog, in a small Rockville, MD home living in deplorable conditions. The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center seized Elmo along with 65 other dogs from a hoarding situation. I did not know how long Elmo suffered in that home, but he would never know anything but love and compassion for the rest of his life.
Unfortunately, my time with Elmo was in jeopardy because he was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on his front left ankle. Due to the location and complexity of the operation, it was a procedure that shelter was unable to perform. I adopted Elmo and quickly began consulting with oncologists and other specialists to provide him with the best medical possible. A surgeon could remove the tumor but due to the location, it would be a difficult procedure. Follow-up treatment would almost guaranteed to be necessary. I promised Elmo the best treatment and followed doctor's recommendations to have the tumor surgically removed.
The surgeon removed as much of the tumor as possible and samples were sent out for biopsy. The doctor tracted the tumor into his joint. A second surgery was not advised because it would involve amputation. Instead oncologists reccommened a course of radiation for a full local cure.
There was no doubt in my mind this was the best possible treatment plan for Elmo, but radiation is extremely expensive. I had just spent several thousand dollars on surgery, and adding a full course of 16 radiation treatments put Elmo and myself in a very tough spot financially. I will do whatever I can to help my best friend, but we will need some help.
There is a special place in this world for Elmo and the world deserves Elmo for as long as possible. He is a gentle giant and the happiest soul on the planet To say that Elmo LOVES everyone is an understatement. He greets everyone with his soulful brown eyes, a large smile, wagging tail, and occasional gas. Elmo's greatest trait; however, is his extraordinary relationship with other aniamls due to his sweet, friendly, confident demeanor. He has played a significant role of "surrogate mother" to the many shy, fearful foster dogs that have come through our home.
Elmo has enhanced my life. He makes everyone feel better with his perpetual smile, and there are many, many future fearful dogs that will benefit from Elmo's tender love and care.
Elmo and I cannot thank you enough. I hope Elmo's story helps you realize the incredible impact a rescue animal can have. I encourage everyone to consider visiting, volunteering, donating, and/or adopting from your local shelter or rescue. Elmo has changed my life, and there are millions of rescue animals just like Elmo waiting for a home. If you would like to read more about Elmo's incredible story, please click on the link below.
