Eli's bowel resection endometriosis surgery

Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am 1 in 10 women who have been fighting severe endometriosis for 14 years.

Endometriosis is a disease that takes an average of 10 years to diagnose, and it occurs when cells from the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other areas of the body, forming tissue and cysts that can adhere to and/or infiltrate organs. This can cause chronic pain and inflammation, heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, problems getting pregnant (infertility) and dysfunction of other affected organs (bladder, bowel, rectum, pelvis to lungs).

My symptoms started in my teens and continue to evolve in intensity and severity. More than 10 years later in 2008 at age 27 I was finally diagnosed with severe endometriosis (level 4) after having an urgent laparotomy where I lost my left ovary due to a 12 cm endometrioma (mass of endometrial tissue) that had twisted and almost ruptured my ovary. Abundant endometrial tissue was scrapped throughout my pelvic area.

Since then I had been on various hormonal treatments (including several temporary induced menopause treatments for up to 6 months) to deter the condition to progress until 2017 when I started experiencing excruciating and debilitating pain in my pelvis, and lower back and having serious digestive problems including the inability to have normal bowel movements, alongside with chronic fatigue and excruciating menstrual periods.

In 2019, after several tests, it was ruled that my endo has progressed to be deep and infiltrating, now affecting my colon and other organs.

I was scheduled for a laparoscopic surgery a year in advance in Canada (due to the waiting list) to happen in 2020. The pandemic came and the medical system collapsed.

I have waited 2 more years under more hormonal treatments but I can not continue to be in induced menopause due to the danger of developing osteoporosis.

I desperately need to have a complex surgery where part of my lower colon will be removed and resected (put it back together) due to a big mass of endometrial tissue formed behind my uterus.

Furthermore, deep scar tissue will be also removed from other organs.

My health situation has become almost fully incapacitating during the last year, limiting my ability to work normally thus I have used all our savings to keep afloat.

One of my dreams has been to be a mother but the doctor has suggested also removing my womb as the endo has also progressed there.

I have decided I want to keep it to try to make that dream come true in the near future by God's grace, knowing that this means I may still battle with excruciating pain and the need for medical support.

The surgery will take place in Querétaro, Mexico in a specialized clinic for endometriosis on March 10th. This clinic was chosen after thorough research and after seeing 5 different doctors in Canada (while I resided there) and Mexico. Formally trained specialists are an extremely rare find and the medical sector does not give the needed attention and importance to this progressive, incurable, debilitating and brutal illness that is leaving many women in their reproductive years incapacitated for the rest of their lives.

I will be fundraising for the cost of the surgery and hospital stay, involving a team of around 8 people including the gynecologist and the gastroenterologist, cost of air transportation with my mother (71 yrs old) who I live with and care for, living expenses for recovery and accommodation while in Querétaro before and after the surgery.

I want you to know that any support provided (financial, prayers, words of support) to this fundraising will prayerfully help me recover the my everyday life functionality, regain hope for a future and the opportunity to keep providing my mom with her sustenance.

I don´t know what the future holds in terms of healing from this disease that has progressively robbed me of the freedom to be the hard-working, independent and proactive woman that has had the privilege to contribute to humanitarian assistance and development work for many years but I trust the One who holds the future and the benevolence of all of you.

Hola, mi nombre es Elizabeth y soy 1 de cada 10 mujeres que han estado luchando contra la endometriosis severa durante 14 años.

La endometriosis es una enfermedad que tarda en promedio 10 años en diagnosticarse, y ocurre cuando las células del revestimiento de la matriz (útero) crecen en otras zonas del cuerpo formando tejido y quistes que se pueden adherir y/o infiltrar órganos. Esto puede causar dolor e inflamación crónica, sangrado abundante, sangrado entre periodos, problemas para quedar embarazada (infertilidad) y disfuncionalidad de otros órganos afectados (vejiga, intestino, recto, pelvis y en algunos casos hasta pulmones).

Mis síntomas empezaron en mi adolescencia que con cada periodo incrementaron en intensidad y gravedad. Más de 10 años después en 2008 a los 27 años fui finalmente diagnosticada con endometriosis severa después de haber tenido una cirugía de laparotomía urgente donde perdí mi ovario izquierdo debido a un endometrioma (masa de tejido endometrial) de 12 cm que había torcido y casi roto mi ovario y haber raspado abundante tejido endometrial en toda mi zona pelvica.

Desde entonces, he pasado por varios tratamientos hormonales (incluidos varias menopausias inducidas de hasta 6 meses) para impedir que la afección progresara hasta 2017, cuando comencé a experimentar un dolor insoportable y debilitante en la pelvis, parte baja de la espalda y problemas digestivos graves, incluida la incapacidad de tener movimientos intestinales normales, junto con fatiga crónica y períodos menstruales insoportables.

En 2019, después de varias pruebas, se dictaminó que mi condición había progresado hasta ser profunda e infiltrante, y ahora afecta mi colón y otros órganos.

Me programaron una cirugía laparoscópica con un año de anticipación en Canadá (debido a la lista de espera) para el 2020. Llegó la pandemia y colapsó el sistema médico.

He esperado 2 años más bajo más tratamientos hormonales pero no puedo seguir en menopausia inducida por el peligro de desarrollar osteoporosis y que el tejido siga afectando más órganos.

Mi situación de salud ha sido casi completamente incapacitante en el último año evitando que pueda trabajar de manera normal teniendo que utilizar todos nuestros recursos para complementar nuestro ingreso familiar.

Por todo esto es que me veo en la necesidad urgente de someterme a una cirugía compleja donde la parte inferior de mi colon será extirpada y reseccionada (reunida) debido a una gran masa de tejido endometrial que se formó detrás de mi útero.

También se eliminará el tejido cicatricial profundo donde sea que se encuentre.

Uno de mis sueños ha sido ser madre, pero el médico me ha sugerido también quitarme la matriz porque la endometriosis también ha progresado allí.

He decidido mantener mi útero para tratar de hacer realidad ese sueño en un futuro cercano por la gracia de Dios, sabiendo que esto significa que todavía tenga que lidiar con dolor intenso y asistencia médica.

La cirugía se llevará a cabo en Querétaro, México en una clínica especializada en endometriosis el 10 de marzo. Esta clínica fue elegida después de una investigación exhaustiva y después de ver a 5 médicos diferentes en Canadá (donde residí muchos años) y México. Los especialistas en endometriosis son un hallazgo extremadamente raro y el sector médico no le da la atención y la importancia necesarias a esta enfermedad progresiva, incurable, debilitante y brutal que está dejando a muchas mujeres en edad reproductiva incapacitadas para el resto de sus vidas.

Esta campaña intentará recaudar fondos para cubrir el costo de la cirugía y la estadía en el hospital, con la participación de un equipo de alrededor de 8 personas, incluido el ginecólogo y el gastroenterólogo; el costo del transporte aéreo con mi madre (71 años) con quien vivo y cuido, gastos de manutención por un mes (tiempo de recuperación) y hospedaje en Querétaro antes y después de la cirugía.

Quiero que sepa que cualquier apoyo brindado (financiero, oraciones, palabras de apoyo) a esta recaudación de fondos me ayudará en oración a recuperar la funcionalidad de mi vida cotidiana, la esperanza de un futuro y la oportunidad de seguir brindando a mi madre su sustento.

No sé qué me depara el futuro en cuanto a si recibiré sanidad de esta enfermedad que me ha robado progresivamente la libertad de ser la mujer trabajadora, independiente y proactiva que ha tenido el privilegio de contribuir a la asistencia humanitaria y desarrollo comunitario por muchos años pero confío en Aquel que tiene el futuro y la benevolencia de todos ustedes.
