I'm not doing this for fun; this is a critical time in Central America, which is still rebuilding from the civil wars of the 1980s and is now facing the mass repatriation of migrants being expelled from the United States. In neighboring Honduras, last year's stolen presidential election resulted in mass government violence (including killings) against pro-democracy demonstrators. Now we're heading to Salvador help make sure (in our own small way) that the same thing doesn't happen there.
This work is unpaid, so I could use some help covering the cost. My minimum goal is $1650, which covers my expenses for the two-week delegation. Here's the breakdown of what I'm spending:
$1000 for in-country expenses (hotel, food, etc -- this was a flat fee charged by the delegation)
$475 for a plane ticket (round trip!)
$25 traveling to/from airport
$150 registration fee
My stretch goal is an additional $350 (for a total of $2000) for the following:
$150 for sponsoring the registration fee of a low-income delegation participant
$200 to be donated directly to one of the grassroots pro-democracy organizations I'll be meeting with in the run-up to the election.
(Oh and two weeks of my accrued vacation from work, but I'll never get that back ;-) )
Any little bit helps!
