Expedition to Iceland
Spende geschützt
I am a middle school science teacher of 20 years, formerly an early childhood educator. I worked for the same public school for 32 years and left to help a relatively new inner city elementary school improve its educational experiences. I am passionate about science and consider it more of a way to look at the world as opposed to a subject to teach in school. I believe the more personal travel experiences I can bring to my students and peers, the more relevant and engaging lessons and professional development offerings will be. I am active in teacher organizations and I am presently a volunteer assisting in the writing of state science standards to support the needs of Louisiana students, particularly middle school.
The National Earth Science Teachers Association has organized a trip to Iceland this summer. While I have often considered the possibility of making the trip to Iceland, this particular opportunity allows me to join fellow Earth science educators to experience and discuss the amazing sights and events of this volcanic, yet somewhat icy environment.
The funds raised will be used for my travel to and from Iceland, the expedition, and any food or incidentals not covered by the trip fare.
Here's a peek at what's in store!
"The land of fire and ice, Iceland is an Earth Science teacher's dream, abundant with majestic waterfalls, active volcanoes, expansive lakes, winding rivers, massive glaciers, and vast mountainous and uninhabited terrain. A land of arctic desert, towering mountains, hot springs, erupting volcanoes, and midnight sun, our itinerary includes opportunities to study a number of topics, including plate tectonics, volcanic systems, rock formation, geological history, glaciation, deposition, geothermal power, hydrology, natural history, carbon sequestering, viking history, human geography, environmental science, and conservation" in this 10 day immersive experience. Funds are due by March 2017.
The timing of this July trip is particularly beneficial. Last summer I was caring for my 80 year-old mom, who was in poor health and mourning the recent death of my younger sister. My mom died in August and facing my first summer without my mom or sister will be difficult. I often look for summer educational experiences so that I begin the new school year energized with new ideas and information. Last summer was dedicated to aiding my mom and then my schoolyear began with my mom's funeral. I will be extremely grateful for the opportunity to visit an environment such as Iceland that offers a close-up and personal look at tectonic plates, volcanoes, glaciers, geothermal energy in use, and a culture of discovery. I also pledge to share my experiences with other educators.
