Eden's Freedom Chair

Eden was born with myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida, which caused paralysis from the waist down. But she doesn't let her physical challenges slow her down! She enjoys playing outside with her siblings and going to the park. We love to hike as a family, but Eden's regular wheelchair does not handle the rough terrain. While it is perfect for indoors, it is not designed to navigate the outdoors. When we hike or go on any kind of outdoor adventure, we must either carry Eden or push her in a stroller, which forces her to become dependent on others to allow her to "go see".
We want to get her a Freedom Chair to give her greater mobility while "off the beaten path" (which includes the front yard). The GRIT Freedom Chair is an all-terrain wheelchair designed to help riders move beyond the pavement. Developed by MIT mechanical engineers, this easy-to-push, lever-driven wheelchair comes armed with rugged mountain bike wheels and a big, sturdy front wheel. Many people who have used them call it the "mountain bike of wheelchairs".
One of the key features of the Freedom Chair is its patented lever-drive system, which makes propulsion about twice as physically efficient than pushing a chair with hand rims. By utilizing this leverage, riders can go faster and farther over more difficult terrain than ever before. The design will help preserve her shoulders from being worn out at an early age from the traditional hand rim style while also allowing her to take herself places she would never be able to go otherwise. We really like this chair because it greatly improves her mobility while still keeping her self-propelled. This will help keep her active and allow her to continue to enjoy the outdoors that she loves so much.
We want to give Eden more opportunities to go, explore, play, and learn. One of the greatest gifts God gives us that we often take for granted is our mobility overmany types of terrain.
