Medical Mission to Guatemala

Hey everybody! Thank you so much for visiting my page! My name is Erika and I am in my second semester of nursing school at Concordia University in Austin.
The nursing program at Concordia is unique in that our nursing curriculum for graduation includes a medical mission to serve the underserved. This was the main reason why I chose to apply to Concordia's nursing program initially. Concordia's nursing program really makes an effort to relate nursing practice and compassion, which is why I chose to pursue nursing. Compassion for people. I am raising money in hopes of getting to Guatemala in order to serve the underserved populations. I have financially supported myself since I turned 18 years old and do not have the financial resources to cover the expenses myself. I have maxed out my loans for the school year with my grants and scholarships going straight to tuition. Because the nursing program is such a time commitment, I am unable to work full time during the semester as I have always done prior to getting into the program. Your donations would help me to pay for airfare and medical supplies I would need to serve the people.
This mission trip would be life changing to me as a person and as a nurse and could open new doors for me to serve. I have been in the position where I did not have medical insurance and could not afford to pay the hospital/doctor's office fees so I would not go to see any health care professional. I feel a connection with the people who are struggling month to month to pay bills and feed themselves. I want to care for these people, love on these people, and try to heal these people to the best of my ability.
During this mission trip, the nurses and student nurses will be performing health assessments, providing immunizations and vaccines, administering much needed vitamins and medications to treat illnesses and any conditions the people may have.
I would be so grateful and humbled in your donations to allow me to serve the people of Guatemala. The mission trip is May 2nd-10th of next year, 2015.
