A few hours ago, on the night of March 29th I received the phone call that my abuela has passed away from her long battle with cancer. My grandmother was many great things, but if I had to choose one attribute that embodied my abuela, it would be strength! She grew up in a small farm in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico and was a single mother to eight children. She dreamed of a life full of opportunities for her children that she knew she simply could not provide on the island. Without hesitation, she saved up every penny that she made and sold everything she had to move her and her children to the continental U.S to give them a better life. Even when the world seemed to be against her, she had the strength to keep moving.
She was also the most loving women I know. Abuela’s home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay, and she treated everyone like family. She had such a big heart, even though she never had a lot to give, she would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. That was just the kind of person she was.
When I think back about where her strength stemmed from, it was always family. She always took care of her family before herself, and now I want to make sure that she is taken care of.
Please help our family raise the money for a proper funeral for my abuela.
